Founder, RateMyPie.nz
I am Chris, and I built RateMyPie.nz because of an eggs benedict pie.
Someone told me a BP had started selling one. I love eggs benedict, and I am, by any honest measure, a serious pie fan, so I could not get there fast enough. What I actually got was a mashy, pulpy mush wearing a pastry costume. My disappointment turned into something closer to bitter dismay, and my bitter dismay turned into a genuine need to tell people about it.
The trouble is, one person's rant about one pie does not really help anyone. What actually helps is everyone's honest opinion, on every pie, all in one place. So it seemed logical to just build that. A platform where all of us get an equal say, pie by pie, rating by rating, no one bakery or one bad review deciding the story on its own.
Why I care this much about a pastry snack
I live in Auckland with my coeliac family, which is another reason pies matter more to me than they probably should. I cannot eat a proper pie at home, so when I am out and about, it counts. Every pie is a small event. That makes a genuinely good one worth celebrating, and a genuinely bad one worth warning people about.
What RateMyPie.nz actually is
A running, crowd sourced leaderboard of New Zealand's pies, rated by the people who actually ate them. No gatekeeping, no single reviewer's palate deciding things for everyone else, just an honest, growing record of what is worth queuing for and what is worth skipping.
If you have had a pie today, good or bad, go add it. That is the whole point.
